An interior gets dirty differently from bodywork: not in a visible layer but in spots and in depth. Grit works into the fabric under the seat, grease from hands into the wheel and the gear lever, crumbs into the gap between console and seat, dust into the vents and into the headlining above the driver.

Vacuuming takes what lies on top. The rest needs the mats out, the seats moved and a brush worked into the seams — because a seam in the upholstery is where whatever you can later smell collects.

Smell is a separate subject. Smoke, wet fur or a soaked carpet do not sit in the air, they sit in the materials. An air freshener lays its own smell over them and two days later nothing has changed.

Preparation

We take the mats and your belongings out, move the seats, and vacuum with a crevice tool — under the seats, in the rails, in the boot and under the spare wheel.

Wet extraction of upholstery

The product goes into the fabric, the brush works the seam, the extractor pulls the dirt out with the water. It is the only method that takes soiling out of the depth of the material rather than spreading it evenly across the surface.

Leather

Cleaning with a leather-specific product, always finished with conditioning. Leather cracks on the bolsters because it is dry — cleaning without feeding it speeds that up.

Cockpit and plastics

Dashboard, console, wheel, door cards and buttons. No gloss dressing: matt plastic should look clean, not wet, and a shiny dash reflects in the windscreen and gets in the way while driving.

Headlining and boot

The headlining is cleaned carefully and never soaked, because once it has come away it does not go back. The boot is treated as part of the interior, not as a cupboard.

Ventilation ducts

Cleaning the vents and the ducts behind them. That is where the dust the whole car then breathes settles — and where a damp smell usually lives.

Ozone oxidises smell molecules in materials and in the ventilation system. It works on cigarette smoke, pets, spilt milk and damp after water ingress — the cases where the source is already gone and the smell has stayed.

It does not work as a substitute for cleaning. If the source of the smell is still under the seat, ozone will not remove it, only dull it for a few days. That is why we ozone after extraction, never instead of it.

The car has to air out afterwards, so we plan the treatment so that it is not handed back the moment the generator goes off.

Wet extraction of the upholstery is about half a day. A full interior with extraction, leather, headlining and ozone takes a day, because the materials have to dry before the car goes back — wet upholstery in a closed car is a new smell instead of a removed one.

We book the slot in advance. When booking, tell us what we are dealing with: hair, smoke, a spill or water ingress. That changes the scope and the time more than the size of the car does.
