A ceramic coating is a thin, hard layer on the clear coat that bonds to it chemically. It is not a filler and it is not a wax: it cannot hide a scratch, and its life is measured in years rather than weeks. Water beads off it, dirt and insects hold on less well, and winter road salt has a harder time reaching the paint.

What it will not do: stop a stone off the motorway, forgive a dirty brush in an automatic wash, or keep the car from getting dirty. It changes how easily dirt comes off and how the paint takes daily use — not whether it needs washing.

So we say plainly what we are choosing: ceramic locks in whatever state the paint is in. If swirls and holograms stay underneath, they stay for years, and that pleasant gloss is exactly what makes them visible.

Assessing the paint

We look at the car under spot lighting and measure the paint thickness with a gauge. Then we know whether there is enough clear coat for correction and how many stages make sense. That is a conversation before the quote, not after it.

Wash and decontamination

Pre-wash, snow foam, and removal of bonded contaminants chemically and with clay. What shampoo leaves behind comes off: rail dust, tar, anything embedded in the surface.

Paint correction

We remove swirls and shallow scratches to the extent we agreed. Without this stage the coating seals the defect underneath itself. The paint correction page has the detail.

Degreasing and application

The surface is degreased and the coating goes on panel by panel in a closed bay, so dust does not settle on a fresh layer. Edges, fuel flaps and mirrors are done separately, because that is where a coating is most often skipped.

Curing

The car stays with us while the coating cures, and it cannot get wet in that time — which is why a ceramic slot cannot be booked for tomorrow at an hour's notice.

Handover and aftercare

At handover we explain how to wash the car, with what, and what to avoid in the first few days. A coating lasts as long as it is meant to only if the car is washed with a pH-neutral shampoo.

The application itself is quick. The time goes into everything before it and the curing after it: with a full scope including multi-stage correction, the car stays with us for two to four days. On paint in good condition, where a single stage is enough, it can be shorter.

We book the slot in advance, because the car occupies a bay for the whole of that work and curing. You can turn up for a hand wash unannounced — not for a coating.

• A car being prepared for sale, where even gloss shows in every photograph in the advert.
• A driver who washes the car themselves and wants it to take less time and risk the paint less.

We do not say "a nine-year coating", because durability depends on the product, the mileage, where the car is parked and how it is washed — not on the claim on the bottle. We give a range of two to five years and tell you what the upper end depends on in your case.

Nor do we claim that a coating replaces paint correction or protects against mechanical damage. Anyone promising both is promising too much.
